The Tambo
Hokitika's premier monument is the reconstructed schooner "Tambo". It's a memorial to the 42 wrecked ships trying to cross the Hokitika River sand bar. The Tambo grounded on the South spit, November 12th, 1866, in a storm, and dragged along the beach in a flood. The anchor was lost for 121 years then rediscovered in 1987.
